  Demon’s Hellfire

  Brady ‘Demon’ Blackstone

I joined the Dark Leopards MC when I was young, earning my patch at just eighteen. They call me Demon, because that’s what I am. Deadly, dangerous, and fiercely protective of those I call family. I’m a threat to everyone, especially those I don’t trust. I have blood on my hands. Death follows me. My heart is cold, unforgiving, and broken.

Then, she walks into my life and everything changes. She is pure light to my darkness and sets my world on fire. She is beautiful, sassy, someone I am proud to call mine. Everything that I never thought I would find. My Hellfire. The other half of my soul.

I wasn’t looking for a mate. She didn’t want one. Fate didn’t give either of us a choice. When the devil himself threatens to keep us apart, it’s going to take everything we have to survive. I just hope we can make it out of hell together.

  Prologue

  Demon

The deep growl of Harleys woke me out of a fitful sleep. Raising my head, I looked around groggily for my mother. I was only ten years old, but I’d learned quickly how to tell the difference between the sound of a Harley and any other engine out there, because that was what the monsters who were after us rode. I also knew instinctively that we were in trouble. That those Harleys were coming for us.

I gritted my teeth as utter terror washed over me, but I refused to give in to that fear. My life had changed drastically over the past couple of years. I wasn’t the happy, innocent kid I used to be. When you were being chased by wolf shifters, ones who were a part of the Lycaon Wolves MC, you had no choice but to adapt and change your way of thinking to theirs, no matter your age, if you wanted to live. My older brother, Griff, taught me that. I listened to everything he said, followed all of his training and instructions closely. I had to. If I didn’t, Griff said there was a good chance the grim reaper would come knocking on my door. I wasn’t ready to die.

  “Griff! Brady! Run!”

I was already up and moving before my mother’s scream rang out in the darkness, but I wasn’t running away like she wanted. I knew Griff wasn’t going to, and neither would I. I was going to stay and fight. I would stand by my brother and protect my mother, because that was what you did for family. Griff taught me that, too.

The bright lights rounded the curve in front of us, highlighting the small lot at the campground that we’d been hiding out at for the past six months. Griff told Mom weeks ago that we needed to move on, but she refused to listen. She said we were going to stay in one place longer than a month this time. That she was tired and wanted to rest. She should have listened to Griff. He was young, but he was smart. He was the reason we were all still alive two years after he and Mom went up against a couple of the Lycaon Wolves club members, killing them. We’d left the only home I’d ever known in the dead of the night after that, and had been on the run ever since.

“Take Brady and get out of here, Mom!” Griff hollered, throwing the key to our old Chevy at her and sliding a gun from the small of his back.

  “Griff, no!”

“Go!” he snarled, his eyes beginning to do that strange, glowing thing they did when his cat was near the surface. He’d explained that to me, too, telling me I had my own cat inside of me. That he sensed it. He wasn’t the only one. Not only did I feel its presence in my body and my mind, but it talked to me sometimes. At first, it had freaked me out, but now… it was almost comforting. Something I desperately needed in the hell my life had become.

“Brady, let’s go!” Mom grabbed my arm and tried to pull me to the car, but it was too late. The wolves had arrived, their bikes kicking up dirt as they began to ride in wide circles around us.

My heart raced as they raised their fists, shaking them at us, laughing, their eyes full of triumph. They’d caught up with us in the past, but this time was different. Before, we’d always managed to get away before things got this far. Now, they were here, right in front of us. I knew, even as young as I was, that blood was about to be spilled, and death would be claiming more than one of us there tonight.

Sliding a knife from its sheath at my ankle, I held my ground like Griff taught me. Show no fear. Your enemies preyed on that. Stand strong, stare them in the eye. I gripped it tightly in my small hand, baring my teeth at the mangy wolves, ready to fight with my brother.

Griff backed up until he stood right in front of me, then growled, “You ready, little man?”

Ready? To take on the three huge beasts who were coming to a stop around us? I was ten years old. A child. They were grown men in a biker club who could easily break me in half. Ones who had fought before. Murdered before. And who were now ready to kill my family. Was I ready? Hell yeah, I was. Griff had been training me for this ever since that fateful night that set us on this path. I wouldn’t let him down.

“Ready,” I snarled, glaring at the MC brothers as they cut their engines, and then got off their bikes to face us. They laughed again when their eyes fell on me. Let them laugh. That was their first mistake. Thinking I was nothing more than a weak kid. I was way more than that, deadly in my own right, as they would soon find out. I raised my head to glare at them, bracing my legs further apart and clutching the knife tighter. My mom whimpered behind me, and an acrid smell filled the air. Fear. I’d smelled it before, but this time it was almost overpowering. That was when I felt my cat stir. He seemed to rise slowly inside of me, his presence filling me, making me feel stronger. Giving me more courage.

“You think you can take us?” One of them grunted, showing off stained, yellow teeth as he grinned our way. “A club whore and her cubs?”

A low growl began to build in my chest, anger like I’d never felt before swamping me. Dark pain filled my mouth as fangs punched through my gums for the first time. I ignored it, shoving it down deep inside as I concentrated on the men in front of me. I was aware of the small dusting of fur that appeared on my arm, and the claws that pushed past my fingertips, but I ignored it all. The only thing I could think about was protecting my mother from the wolves who were slowly closing a tight circle around us.

“I think you better back the fuck off,” Griff snarled, raising his gun to point it at the man’s forehead.

  “Fuck you!”

Griff pulled the trigger, hitting the guy right between the eyes. He didn’t stop there. Swinging his Glock around, he went after the next wolf, but he wasn’t quite fast enough. The man stepped in and slammed his arm up, kicking the gun from my brother’s hand and sending it flying. I didn’t have time to see what happened after that, because the third one closed in on Mom and me from behind. I turned to face him just in time to see him grab my mother around the throat, pull her back against him, and plunge a knife into her heart.

A loud, anguished cry left me as he yanked the knife out and shoved her to the ground. Bile rose up in my throat as the scent of my mother’s blood permeated the area. I watched as she turned over onto her back, clutching at her chest, gasping for air. Her eyes were wide with shock as she looked at me.

“Brady, baby, run,” she rasped, tears streaming down her checks. “Run!”

My body began to shake uncontrollably as I watched the life slowly flowing from her body. My mother. She and Griff were the only two constant things in my life. The only people who cared about me. Loved me. There was no one else. And now, she was leaving me. Throwing my head back, I let out a loud, long yell, and then I attacked. The man was too busy gloating over what he
’d just done to my mother and wasn’t ready for the ball of fury that slammed into him. I caught him off guard, and he lost his footing, tumbling over into the dirt.

“You little shit!” he shouted, grabbing a fist full of my hair and pulling hard, trying to dislodge me from his body. “God dammit! Get the fuck off me!”

I was so consumed with rage, that nothing he did could move me. I clung to him with one hand, digging my newly found claws deep into his skin. In my other hand, I still held my knife. With a snarl, I slammed it into his gut, yanked it out, and plunged it in again, this time a little higher. All the while, my growls and snarls filled the air. I wasn’t letting go, wasn’t getting off him.

  “Son of a bitch!”

I felt his claws dig into my arm, heard his chest begin to rattle as he struggled to breathe. He fought to get away, but I wasn’t allowing it. My heart was breaking, shattering, as the life was leaving my mother’s body. This man had taken her from me. If she wasn’t going to make it, neither was he.

“Brady! Brady, it’s over, little brother. It’s over.”

The sound of my brother’s voice finally broke through the rage, and my arm froze in the air, hovering over a chest that had been ripped to shreds by the blade in my hand. Ragged breaths tore out my throat as I stared into the face of the man beneath me. He was gone. I’d killed him.

I stiffened when I felt a strong arm go around my shoulders, my gaze rising to meet my brother’s solemn one. There was no condemnation there, no shock. Only pride.

  “He’s gone, little brother.”

I let my eyes fall back to the man below me, before I lowered my arm and stood on shaky legs. Slowly, I backed away from the carnage in front of me, turning to where my mother lay still, her eyes wide, vacant, staring at nothing. Walking over to her, I collapsed beside her, reaching for her hand. Tears filled my eyes as I clutched tightly to her, small sobs slipping as I wondered where Griff and I would go from here.

Griff gave me a moment alone before he finally came over and knelt beside me. He rested a hand on my shoulder, bowing his head and closing his eyes. He stayed like that for several minutes, quiet and still. Then, he turned his head to look at me and said gruffly, “We need to bury her and get moving, Brady. There could be more coming for us.”

He was right. Griff was always right. Gritting my teeth tightly, I nodded. Leaning in, I gave Mom a quick kiss on the cheek before rising to my feet.

  “Brady?’

I swallowed hard, meeting my brother’s gaze, waiting for him to speak. I didn’t have anything to say. I’d just lost my mother. Because of that, I’d killed for the first time. No part of me regretted it. I wanted to go back and kill the devil who took her from me a hundred times.

“You did good, little brother. Fought hard, just like I taught you.”

  I nodded, staying silent.

“I’m proud of you, Brady. So damn proud.”

  I nodded again.

“We’re going to get them back for this, Brady. Every last fucking one of them. You hear me?”

Taking a deep breath, I glanced back down at my mom one last time. He was right. They were all going to die.

The bar was crowded, the music so loud it was almost unbearable. Not for the first time, I wondered what the hell we were doing here. It had been two days since we rescued the shifter children from a clan of hyenas. We should have been back in Texas, not cooling our heels in New Orleans while we waited for Kid and his new mate, Aine, to figure their shit out.

I sighed, grabbing hold of the ice-cold bottle of beer sitting in front of me and tipping back my head to take a deep drink. I was being a whiney little bitch, and I knew it. Kid needed this time with Aine, and Wraith was right to have Shadow, Shyla, and me stick around until they were ready to go back home. It wasn’t safe to leave them alone after what just went down, especially since some of the hyenas got away. At least, Shadow and Shyla had changed their plans tonight and come to the bar with me, instead of doing their own thing. I hadn’t really wanted to be alone, but didn’t want to tell them that.

I was happy for Kid; I really was. And I was thrilled that Shadow had found Shyla. I had a new sister. Not only was Shyla a complete badass, but she loved my brother fiercely. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for him. He deserved it. One day, if I was lucky enough, maybe I would find a love like that, too.

I shook my head, grunting as I took another swig of my beer. Fuck that. I didn’t want or need that kind of complication in my life. I had my brother, my new sister, and my MC brothers. That was all I needed.

  “Hey, little brother.”

I glanced over at Shyla where she was snuggled up tight in the curve of my brother’s arm, and cocked an eyebrow.

“Stop lying to yourself,” she said quietly, leaning in toward me as if to give the impression we were having a private conversation. That was bullshit. There were no secrets between Shadow and Shyla, and there shouldn’t be.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said gruffly, turning to lean back against the bar, my gaze roaming slowly around the room.

Shyla let out a low laugh as she reached out to lay a hand on my arm. “Ya know, normally I can only hear you when you want me to, but your thoughts are loud today, Brady.” Squeezing my arm gently, she said, “You deserve to find happiness just as much as any of your chapter brothers do. More than some, I would say.”

I shrugged, gritting my teeth together tightly, before I pulled away from her.

  “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to intrude.”

  I shrugged again, not responding.

“Don’t be a dick, Demon,” Shadow growled angrily. “Shyla deserves your respect.”

He was right, but I kept quiet. I honestly didn’t know what to say. I was being a dick, and I knew it, but I couldn’t seem to stop. It was better if I just shut the hell up.

“Dammit, Demon, apologize to my mate before I kick…”

I missed whatever else my brother said, as my gaze locked on a vision decked out all in black gliding across the floor just a few yards away. She strode with purpose, her shoulders straight, her head held high, confidence radiating from her. Her light auburn hair ran in curls down to the middle of her back, and I wondered if it would feel as soft as it looked if I slid my hand through them.

Someone must have called out to her because she stopped, turning to look back, giving me a clear view of her round, pert breasts. My gaze trailed down further, landing on the slight curve of her hips and below before I raised my head to look into wide, golden-brown eyes that were staring at me in what looked like shock. Her nostrils flared slightly, and those captivating eyes widened even more, if that were possible.

I caught a faint scent, one that made my cock begin to stiffen, and then my heart started to hammer in my chest. What the hell? My brow furrowed, and I set my beer on the bar behind me before taking a step in her direction. Her mouth opened slightly, and her tongue slipped out to wet her lips, her own eyes slowly trailing over me. They stopped on my cut, narrowing on the patch that declared me a member of the Dark Leopards MC in Texas.

  “Fuck!”

I heard that swear word come out of her pretty little mouth from as far away as we were, and then she turned and ran.

I took off after her, ignoring my brother’s shout behind me. I’d never seen the beautiful woman before, never smelled her amazing scent, but in that few seconds my life had just drastically changed. There was no going back. No ignoring it. She was mine. My mate. My future. And she was leaving me.

I slammed through the back door of the club, just moments behind her, and had to pull up short so that I didn’t knock her over. She stood there, facing away from me, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist, her head bowed. She’d waited for me.
